Academic Activities:
Dr. Lowell H. Gill firmly believes in being engaged in his discipline both from a practical as well as an academic standpoint. Over the course of his career spanning three decades, he has participated in and contributed to a wide array of academic activities designed to further the discipline and enhance it through research. Here are just a few examples of these activities:
 
  • From 1977 to 1988 Dr. Gill prepared and presented at an Orthopaedic Pathology Conference that is now the Carolinas Medical Center Residency Program

  • From May, 1985 to April, 1988 he served as Chairman of Residency Education Program

  • Starting in 1986 and continuing through the present day, Dr. Gill serves as a Board Examiner for Oral Examinations for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

  • Dr. Gill founded Oscar Miller Day in 1981 and served as program chairman through 2002. It is an annual orthopedic educational symposium attended by orthopedists.

  • In 1986 and 1987 he founded and served as program chairman for the Orthopaedic Spring Lectureship that has now been expanded to include the Carolinas Medical Center Spring Symposium

  • He has served as an associate editor, guest editor and consulting editor on no fewer than five different orthopedic-related journals

  • Dr. Gill conducts research grant reviews for the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS)

  • He was chairman of the committee on outcome studies for AOFAS from 1991-1997 and has participated as on a task force for development outcomes study survey instrument for the lower extremity which was associated with Committee on Musculoskeletal Specialty Societies (COMSS) and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)

  • Dr. Gill has also served on task force groups including the Evidence Analysis Work Group for AAOS and the Development of Clinical Guidelines for Management of Pain for Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis for the American Pain Society

  • Of particular note and personal enjoyment for Dr. Gill was his association with work for the 1999 Special Olympics. He served as Course Chairman for AAOS and developed a special assessment form used at the screening clinic during the world games of The Special Olympics that were conducted in Chapel Hill, NC in 1999
